About The Rotary Club Of Decatur

The Rotary Club of Decatur, Rotary District 6900, is an organization of business and professional leaders united worldwide, who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world. Rotarians are business and professional leaders who take an active role in their communities while greatly enriching their personal and professional lives. A Rotary club contains a diverse group of professional leaders from the community that the club serves.

With our meeting place today in DeKalb County, Georgia's original courthouse that adorns the central square of the city of Decatur - so well popularized in "Gone with the Wind", Decatur Rotarians gather each Friday at 12:15PM for fellowship, lunch, and a guest speaker, until 1:30PM. These leaders of Decatur and DeKalb County come together as well to support their community through their President's Fund as just one part of their Decatur Rotary Club Foundation, their state through the Georgia Rotary Student Fund, and the world community through Rotary International's Rotary Foundation.

History of The Rotary Club Of Decatur

The Decatur Rotary Club - sponsored by the Atlanta Rotary Club - Georgia's first Rotary club, became the first Rotary club founded in the suburbs of America. Its sponsorship by the Atlanta club was originally inspired by the 1936-37 tenure of Rotary International President Will Manier, Jr., of Nashville, Tennessee, and carried through by Governor Tibor Molnar of District 165, which comprised all of Georgia at that time. By December of 1937, there were enough members together to pledge this Decatur Club. The Decatur Rotary Club held its Charter Presentation Meeting in the dining hall of Emory University in April of 1938. From its original membership of 19 members at that time, America's first suburban Rotary club has today grown from these humble origins to a membership of over 170, and the sponsorship of the Northlake and West DeKalb Rotary Clubs.
